That evening at dinner, it felt to Beck as if Savannah and Campbell had been a part of the Rhoads clan forever. Nanny and the teen boys had clearly taken to Campbell, and Beck’s parents and sister seemed to want to know everything about Savannah. His brother Wyatt said nothing, but the knowing look in his eyes indicated he believed this was more than an ordinary interview. Couldn’t blame him for thinking that. After all, this was the first time he’d brought a subject home with him.

Of course, Beck chalked that up to Campbell’s failed home visit and wanting to see how he’d act in another family. Meeting here this weekend was convenient, he told himself. An opportunity to report on the boy’s behavior in a family Beck knew to be warm and welcoming. An opportunity to see how Savannah fit into his family. Of course, that wasn’t necessary for the article, but it satisfied his curiosity.

Right now, Savannah was telling everyone about one of her funniest fashion fails.

“I had found this gorgeous, variegated fabric that looked like light and dark swirls of coffee, and I couldn’t wait to create something beautiful out of it. There were lots of panels to be pieced together for the skirt.” Savannah paused and smiled. “Well, let me tell you, sugar, the way the parts came together, the back of that skirt looked like it had been sprayed by a septic truck.”

Everyone laughed, but she seemed to think better of what she’d said. “I’m sorry, y’all. I shouldn’t have brought that up at the dinner table.” Which, of course, made everyone—even Savannah—laugh harder at her faux pas.

Talk about the clothes she’d designed reminded him of what she’d said about dressing to conceal her limp. As far as he was concerned, he couldn’t imagine why anyone would fixate on that when there was so much else about her to notice.

Even so, he understood why she wanted to draw attention away from her limp. But he wondered what else she was trying to hide.

He wanted to know more about her. More than the glossy, retro chic exterior that she presented to the world. He wanted to know what made her tick. What made her smile.

He turned to face her and opened his mouth to ask the first question that popped into his head, but Campbell injected himself into the fun and started telling a pointless tale about something that had happened at school.

When Campbell was done, Beck’s dad lobbed the question he’d been dreading.

“How did the interview go?”

With hesitation, Beck answered exactly what he was asked. “The interview went well. The editor loves my ‘feel-good’ stories. Susan had talked to him and said I’m a strong contender for the promotion.”

Savannah met his gaze. She knew the editor had told him to go deeper with his stories. But she didn’t know just how irritated he was at having to prove himself in a job that he’d been doing exceptionally well for the past few years.

And he didn’t see the point in bringing up the phone conversation he’d had with Susan this afternoon.
